Hiperspacio

about

The countdown begins, audience prepares to an extraordinary journey, the work of the highly appreciated Venezuelan pioneer of electronic music Angel Rada. The voice that emanates from the legendary vocoder Korg VC-10 introduces us to “Hiperspacio”, the first single from Rada: Tropical Cosmic Sounds From Space, a new compilation of the work this cult musician made by the young Barcelona label El Palmas Music. This upcoming release comes with a video clip realized by the audiovisual studio Dedo Ciego.

“Hiperspacio” appears for the first time in Viveka (1984), Rada’s second album, a double LP made entirely with electronic instruments. Even more than his first album Upadesa (1983), which was better understood abroad than in his homeland, Viveka was a milestone with few precedents in his country, it opened a new horizon to other musicians that shared the same avant-garde needs of expression, those who delighted with the depth of what Rada’s proposal meant for his time.

In “Hiperspacio” we find a duality between a sequenced, cyclic rhythmic base throughout the whole song and the main focus: a raw expressiveness of his execution of different synthesizers, liberating exotic-cosmic scales of almost unpredictable nature. Although his music is deeply rooted on electro-acoustic experimentalism, psychedelia and kraut rock’s influence during his higher music studies in Germany between 1973 and 1978 (including direct conversations with Klaus Schulze, among others), Rada is always heading towards the search from their own territory, a blend of his native context, the warm Caribbean with a spiritual exploration through asian philosophy and culture.

The first ideas for songs such as “Hiperspacio”, “Kundalini”, “Satori”, “Isla tropical” and others from his album Viveka (Sanskrit for “discernment”) began to emerge when he was convalescing after an emergency surgery at a clinic in Caracas. In his urge to keep music as an expression of art, Rada puts us before the contemplation of an idea, in his own words: “to realize that life is a magical theater where things appear and disappear, where we have to learn to discern what is real from what is not, without trying to intervene externally, only then does suffering leave us”.
